Most listings hire a photographer based on price alone, then find out too late what that price didn’t include. Here’s what’s actually worth asking before you book.
“What’s the turnaround time?”
A listing sitting unpublished for three days while you wait on photos is a real cost, not a minor inconvenience. Next-day delivery should be the standard you’re asking for, not a premium add-on.
“What am I actually allowed to do with these photos?”
This one gets skipped constantly. Some photographers license images only for the specific listing and timeframe — reusing them later, or for a different property, can be a real licensing violation. Ask explicitly what usage rights come with the price.
“Is drone coverage actually licensed?”
Drone photography in Canada requires proper certification and insurance. A photographer flying without either isn’t just cutting corners — they’re putting you at real liability if something goes wrong on your property.
“What does ‘HDR’ actually mean here?”
HDR (high dynamic range) done well balances a bright window with a dim interior in one natural-looking shot. Done poorly, it produces the over-processed, slightly unreal look that makes some listing photos instantly recognizable as amateur. Ask to see real, unedited examples of their HDR work, not just polished portfolio pieces.
“What happens if I’m not happy with the results?”
A clear answer here tells you a lot. Vague or defensive answers are a real signal — a photographer confident in their work has a straightforward policy, not an excuse.
The bottom line
Price matters, but it’s not the whole picture. Turnaround, licensing, real certification, and a clear policy on results are what actually separate a good hire from a cheap one.
